The entry of a couple of cheery ladies with huge smiles on their faces to Bell Cambridge reception was a welcome addition to a grey British ‘Summer’s’ day in early June 2016. As they chatted about the school we had no idea of their extent of their history here…
The ladies, named Dorothee and Cathy, had studied at Bell Cambridge back in the Summer of ’69. They had now returned for a reunion tour and a good look around the place. I had the privilege of taking this tour and the ladies were so excited and appreciative about it. They remembered bits of the school, socialising and eating here but much of it had modernised and developed beyond recognition. Their English was great and they put this down to the basis of English language established here at Bell all that time ago.
As they told their tale it transpired that it wasn’t quite a fairy story though. The pair didn’t like each other originally! They soon struck up a friendship at the school but lost touch after their trip to England. After ten years apart Dorothee and Cathy met again in Switzerland by pure chance. With some more maturity they managed to get on and stay friends, even having their children and going through huge life events in tandem.
Not only in personal but also in professional life the ladies’ relationship, established at Bell, bloomed. They started a successful business together and travelled the world with it.
Even in the wet and windy weather they re-appeared at Bell Cambridge in, these former students’ incredible good news story couldn’t help but enlighten and amaze us all. As they strode away through the familiar space of the carpark I couldn’t help but wonder whether they, or other satisfied customers, would come back to Bell again with another set of inspiring stories.
