Course description

Project themed English lessons

30 hours per two week course

Learning through projects is particularly motivating for young learners and helps them remember the language that they learn. Working in groups, students use English to produce something tangible like a short film, a presentation, a magazine or a short story.

Project work guarantees students study something new every time. Each project is based on a theme. Autumn Explorer is designed around 3 weekly project themes:

  • Week 1: Magic and Mystery
  • Week 2: Gadgets and Gizmos
  • Week 3: Let's Celebrate!

 

Week 1: Magic and Mystery

Students will focus on magical stories, investigating some of Britain's most famous mysteries such as the building of Stonehenge or the sightings of the Loch Ness Monster

Example guiding question:

  • How can we invent a new magical land for stories?
  • How can we design a new character to join our favourite story or film?

Example projects:

  • A performance of a piece of Shakespearean theatre
  • Writing a fictional social media profile for a new character to add the existing ‘Harry Potter’ stories
  • Reading tasks involving extracts of classical and contemporary literature

Example learning outcomes:

  • The students will how to use the full range of English narrative tenses. (B2-C1 levels)
  • Students will improve their creative and descriptive writing skills by working on their own fantasy adventure story. (A2 - C2 levels)
  • The students will be encouraged to work with their peers to create an imaginative and original story
    (Creativity & Cross-Cultural Awareness)

Excursion: Windsor Castle

Week 2: Gadgets and Gizmos

During this course the students will discover the origins of the technology which we now take for granted. They will also be encouraged to speculate on the innovations which will shape our world in the future.  

Example guiding question

  • How different would my life be without technology?
  • Which types of employment will become automated in the future?

Example projects:

  • Designing an invention or innovation and developing a business proposal
  • Using own devices to write stories and reports on online platforms
  • Creating an online quiz for fellow students to complete using their own devices

Example learning outcomes

  • Students will improve their understanding and use of modal and semi-modal structures to talk about the possibilities of different electronic devices. (B1-B2 level)
  • Students will develop their ability to write coherently and cohesively by writing short stories on an online platform and reviewing each other’s work. (A2-B2 level)
  • Students will be required to think critically to speculate on future developments in technology and its potential (Critical Thinking Skills)

Study tours: London, including The Science Museum and walking tour

Excursion: Cambridge including punting and walking tour

Week 3: Let's Celebrate!

This project will develop their cross-cultural understanding by learning all about different festivals and traditions from the UK, the students’ home countries and from around the rest of the world.   

Example guiding question:

  • How can we create our own festival to celebrate our time at Bell?
  • What are the most interesting traditions from the countries and regions of the UK?

Example projects:

  • Planning and running a school-wide festival
  • Designing and conducting a quiz about different British traditions and customs
  • Making and presenting fact posters on different traditions and festivals from around the world

Example learning outcomes:

  • Students will learn relative clauses to describe a festival from their own country to their classmates (B1 level)
  • Students will be able to use functional phrases to suggest ideas and express opinions while discussing plans for a school festival (B1-C1 level)
  • Students will develop their collaboration skills during lessons focused on planning for a school-wide event.

Electives  

18 hours per two week course 

Elective sessions are taught by experienced activity leaders and develop students' skills in their chosen activities in English. Students practice their English, while focused on an activity, which leads to a natural, fluent use of the language.

A selection of active, creative and academic electives will be available each week. Choose your activities on arrival. Examples include:

Study tours

3 full day study tours per two week course

Students learn about British life and culture through study tours to historic UK destinations such as London, Oxford, Cambridge and Stratford-upon-Avon.

Study tours are learning opportunities outside the classroom and are part of the academic programme. Students are prepared for the study tour in class, given a task to do on the trip and have a feedback lesson afterwards. Young learners are carefully supervised on all study tours.

Activities

18 hours per two week course

After lessons, electives, and a delicious dinner, students have an evening activity – more chance for your child to learn and practise English. Examples of evening activities include team-building challenges, treasure hunts and film nights.
