Students stay with you and your family while they study with us.
Find the answer to some frequently asked questions about being a homestay host.
What is a homestay?
How long will students stay for?
Our students join us for differing periods of time, but all at least a week. You could therefore have a student staying with you for one week or more.
We will discuss all student stays with you before we place them.
How much could I earn?
If you are based in Cambridge you can earn from £103 to £276 per week, London from £154 - £246 per week.
What support will I recieve from Bell?
We are committed to supporting you throughout your time as a homestay host. You will meet members of our team who will support you during your time with us.
Who are Bell?
We are an English language school. We teach students from around the globe to improve their English, gain a qualification or prepare for life at an English-speaking University.
Where do your students come from?
All over the world - last year we welcomed students from 122 nationalities.
How old will the students be?
Our students in London will all be over 16.
The majority of our students in Cambridge are over 16, but occasionally there may be under 16s. We would however discuss this with you in advance of their stay.
What facilities do I need to offer?
In the bedroom, we ask that students are provided with:
- A comfortable single or double bed (no bunk beds)
- Bed linen
- Set of towels
- Drawer space
- Bed/desk lamp
- Shared or private bathroom
- Laundry facilities
- Use of iron and ironing board
We also ask that families are DBS checked and provide us with 2 character references.
Do I need to provide meals?
You can choose from two options:
- Daily breakfast
- Daily breakfast, evening meals and weekend lunches
The option you choose will affect how much you are paid.
How close do I need to live?
Cambridge: up to a 35-minute bus ride or 35-minute walk
London: up to a 30-minute walk or tube journey
Do I need to speak another language?
No. Students choose to stay in a homestay as it gives them the opportunity to practise their English in real-life situations. We also encourage our students to share their culture with you.
