Recycling knowledge

The Environment and You

Do you have a New Year’s resolution? If not, how about doing a little bit more for the environment? Recycling is certainly a hot topic at the moment; it’s difficult to get through the day without hearing something about ways we can do our bit to save the world. Recycling is a great way to give the planet a helping hand but why should we do it? Does it really make a difference? Well, here are a few facts that might help you make a decision:

  • Recycling one aluminium can saves enough energy to run a TV for 3 hours!
  • An aluminium can takes about 400 years to break down naturally!
  • 500,000 trees need to be cut down to produce each week’s Sunday newspapers!
  • About 1 billion trees worth of paper is thrown away each year in the U.S.A!
  • Plastic bags and other plastic waste kill as many as 1 million sea creatures every year!
  • Some statistics show that rainforests are being cut down at a rate of 100 acres per minute!

Don’t worry though, it’s not all bad news. There are people out there who are already doing their bit to help:

You ‘Can’ the bride

Andrea Parish and Peter Geyer are an American couple who have come up with a very green way of paying for their wedding; they’re raising the money by collecting and recycling aluminium cans. They will need to collect around 400,000 to pay for the wedding, which will certainly mean the streets around the church will be clean and ready for the big day.
