Bell teachers' top study tips

The Bell Team
Written by the Bell Team

Some of our Cambridge and London teachers share their top tips for studying outside of the classroom.

Ken Bateup, Bell Cambridge

1. Play word games

A fun way to enjoy learning new vocabulary and revising the words you already know. Try some crossword puzzles, anagrams, word searches, and games like Scrabble and Boggle.

2. Use English language audio guides

Pick up an English language audio guide when you visit museums and tourist destinations. You can pause and repeat, skip parts you are not interested in, and you often have a visual image to make the information come to life. Sometimes there’s written information so you can check understanding too!

3. Listen to the radio

Practise your listening skills at home by listening to the radio. Make up your own questions to answer to help you focus on what you are hearing.

4. Give yourself daily language challenges

Such as “Over lunchtime, I am going to use the grammar I studied this morning at least 3 times.”

5. Go to the theatre

This live experience is so much better for your English than the cinema. Try to get a ticket as near the front as possible so that you can see the actors’ eyes. Choose a story-led play such as The Mousetrap or The Woman in Black. Read a synopsis before you go and ask your teacher for help on any challenging themes or vocabulary. Above all, enjoy!
