Robert Mathews

Qualifications: BA History from University of Oxford (Brasenose College) and a CELTA.

Before moving to Bell in 1968, Robert – or Bertie as he’s affectionately known – began his English language teaching career in Italy, straight after completing his A-levels.

He went on to do a history degree at the University of Oxford, studying law afterwards and successfully completing his bar exams to become a qualified barrister.

To this day, he teaches law, preparing our students for university on our University Foundation Programme.

Law affects everything, so studying it gives you the opportunity to develop interests in a huge range of activities, from sport and pop music, to business and science. Is it any wonder that so many world leaders and policy makers have a background in law?

Not to be outdone by the current crop of YouTube stars, Robert also enjoys making videos to help students retain newly-acquired knowledge. Here’s one he made with his law class:

He is also a classic car and classic aircraft enthusiast, and hold’s a pilot’s licence. His teaching credentials carry over into the world of aviation; Robert has taught pilots to fly, as well as teaching air traffic control students.

A lover of languages, Robert’s desire to learn has led him even to dead languages such as Ancient Egyptian!
