Teacher mentor

Ken Bateup

Ken has extensive experience in mainstream education as well as the EFL sector. He started his career as a primary school teacher in Canterbury, before he qualified as an English language teacher with a CELTA in 1991. This opened up doors to teach anywhere in the world, from Brighton to Rome in Italy.

In 1999, after taking a career break, he returned to sector and joined Bell, teaching professional English and IELTS courses to students. He trained for his DELTA qualification, which opened up more doors, working with undergraduate and postgraduate students at Bath University as their dedicated IELTS officer.

He qualified as an IELTS examiner and designed and delivered IELTS teaching-training courses for teachers. He also became co-founder, test-designer, and examiner for UBELT, a medical English test for UK-based medical recruiters.

In 2014, Ken moved to Bell Cambridge as a teacher mentor and teacher of academic English to students preparing to study their postgraduate degrees at a primarily English-speaking university.

As a teacher mentor, he provides support and guidance to teachers who are newly-qualified and/or new to Bell and helps to run CPD sessions.

Prior to his teaching career, Ken was a chef. In what will no doubt be the basis for a rom com one day, Ken met his future wife while training to be a chef – she was the one training him! Together, they worked on a holiday farm for disadvantaged children. Today, Ken teaches cookery classes at a college in the evening, and is the proud owner of over 400 cookery books! This man knows his stuff.
