Guide to Bell English: What's the best way to use Bell English
Online?
1. Know your level:
You can take a Bell Online test to establish your level, or you may already
know the level you want to try. If you find the exercises too easy
or too difficult, try some higher or lower levels until you find the
level you are happiest with.
2. Know your weaknesses:
You might want help in Grammar, Vocabulary, Listening, Reading, Pronunciation,
for example. By choosing these Study areas you can focus on your weak
areas.
3. Choose your Topic.
Our Exercises are also divided by Topic, so you can also choose the subjects
you are particularly interested in, for example: Entertainment, Travel,
Britain.
4. Choose the material that suits your level, study area:
Bell English Online Material is not a course, in the sense that
you have to do exercises in a fixed order. In any level, we have arranged
material in a certain order, so that the easier exercises are at the
beginning, but you can do as much as you want, when you want, as often,
or as little as you want.
5. Look at your record:
Bell English Online has score memory. This means that the program will
remember the number of times you have practised an exercise (in practise
mode) and your highest score (in test mode). You can use this information
to keep a record of your own progress.
6. Use all the facilities of Bell English Online:
- Follow the Dictionary link
If you don't understand a word in an exercise, you can click on the
dictionary link,
drag the dictionary mark (?) over the word and look
up the word in the
Cambridge Online Dictionary of English.
- Look at the help pages
Many of our exercises have help pages which explain the grammar point
or vocabulary area, or give you help in doing the exercise
- View the demonstration
Each of the ten exercise types has a demonstration, which shows you
how it works.
- Practise mode first then test mode
You can try an exercise in Practise mode first (which will give you
more help) and then do it in Test mode. This is a good way to learn.
7. Ask a teacher: Sometimes you will want to ask a person for
help. Maybe you don't understand a word, or an idea, or how to do something,
or you want some advice about what to do next. You have three possibilities i) If
you are at a school or university, you can ask your own teacher for help. ii) You can also check the FAQ (list of Frequently
Asked Questions), to find out if your question has been asked before
8. Don't do too much at once. Because the program will remember
your scores, you don't have to try to do everything at once. In fact
it's better to make lots of little visits than just a few long ones
9. Use your English. Practising online is only one of many ways
to improve your English. Don't forget the others, including: Talk with
others in your town or class Join Email groups, discussion forums and
chat rooms, including the ones you can find on this site. Read and Listen
to as much English as you can, including websites.
10. Keep in touch! Bell English Online is only one of the ways
in which the Bell can help you. You can email us anytime if:
- You need a special course at one of our schools?
- You want to come on one of our many regular courses in Britain or
at one of our other schools.
- You have suggestions about how we can make Bell English Online even
better.
- You just want to say Hi
- You have a question
