FCE - First Certificate in English exam preparation modules

What is BellEnglish Online FCE?
Bell's FCE Online is a large bank of practice material for preparing yourself to take the Cambridge First Certificate Exam. The course covers the Reading exam, the Listening exam, the Writing exam and the Use of English exam. The speaking exam is not covered. It is divided up into modules. Each module covers one question in one exam. In addition there are modules which include pratice examination papers in Reading, Listening, Writing and Use of English.
The normal price of each module is £5.00

 

What is in a Bell FCE module?
A module normally has:

  • Some practice exercises, which are easier tasks than you will find in the exam, but which get harder and closer to what you have to do in the exam.
  • Some exam exercises, which are like the tasks you have to do in the exam.
  • Instant feedback on the exercises, which tell you where you have made a mistake and why.
  • The facility to print some exercises onto paper.
  • A notebook facility which allows you to make notes in a separate window, which you can save, print to email to Bell English Online.
  • A "My Record" button which allows you to see a record of what you have completed and what scores you have achieved.
  • Hints and tips to help you with the exercises and with examination technique.

 

Why should I take the FCE Exam?
The Cambridge First Certificate in English exam is known all over the world and is accepted by universities, employers and national education authorities in many countries as evidence of the required standards in English.

 

How much does it cost to register for the exam?
To take the FCE exam you need to register for the exam at a recognised examination centre. The examining authority UCLES has 1,900 centres around the world. To find out where your nearest centre is follow this link. The exam fee is fixed by UCLES. To find out how much each centre charges you will have to contact them individually.

 

How many parts are there to the exam?
The exam has five separate papers. Reading, Writing, Use of English (this paper has questions about grammar and vocabulary), Listening and Speaking.

 

How long does the exam take?
The times for each paper are:

  • Reading: 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Writing: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Use of English: 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Listening: 40 minutes (approximately)
  • Speaking: 14 minutes (approximately)
  • The total time is just under 6 hours

Are all the papers taken on the same day?
No. The exam is taken over two or three days. Papers 1,2 and 3 are taken on the same day with papers 4 and 5 being taken on separate days or together on a different day. The arrangements for papers 4 and 5 being taken on seperate days or together on a different day. The arrangements for papers 4 and 5 vary from centre to centre.

 

What mark do I need to get to pass the exam?
Each of the papers is worth 40 marks so the total number of marks for the five papers is 200. To get a grade C in the exam you will need to get about 120 marks, 60%. Individual papers are given a percentage and are not marked as pass or fail. To pass the exam students need to pass all of the five papers. However, it is possible that if you do not do very well in one paper and do well in all the others you could still pass the exam.

 

What is the best way to prepare for the exam?
There are a number of different ways to prepare for the exam. A lot of students decide to take an exam course in a language school, some decide to study by themselves with a course book or specialist software. Increasingly, students are using the Internet as a way of preparing for the exam. The way that you prepare for the exam depends on your situation and how much money you want to spend?

 

What level do I need to be at to take the exam?
To have a good chance of passing the exam students need to be at an Upper Intermediate level.
